Trying to be a more conscious consumer is becoming easier in today’s climate; more companies and businesses are becoming transparent with their practices, harmful repeats are being eliminated, the push for more ecologically friendly solutions are being made and so much more. For over 50 years, experts alike have agreed that the use of pesticides is negatively impacting our pollinator population, as well as humans and other animals.
What are pollinators and why are they so important, you may ask? Pollinators are necessary for fertilizing plants and help them create seeds, so as you may already know, foods that need pollinators are ones such as honey, apples, plums, apricots, almonds, avocados, onions, strawberries, blueberries and the list continues.
When it comes to mosquito removal, pesticides used by other companies can be full of chemicals like pyrethroids that not only remove mosquitos, but other animals and pollinators like bees/honey bees, fireflies, caterpillars, fish, etc. Runoff from pesticides and chemicals that get into waterways and eventually the ocean, can kill ocean life (like fish) and severely affect coral reef growth and production which is a major concern in the Virgin Islands.
You may wonder – what actually is the main component of pesticides and sprays? Pyrethroids for example, are both natural and synthetic neurotoxins that cause almost immediate paralysis and death to mosquitos. They are considered safe around humans and animals, but not harmless. There is a large body of research to back the negative side effects and long-term effects of these chemicals. Pyrethroids are also known as endocrine disruptors, which cause a number of particularly harmful side effects in humans who have been exposed.
Endocrine disruptors (EDs), or hormone disruptors, are in pesticides which contribute to ADHD, lowered IQ, depression, reproductive disorders and various cancers. Not only are these pesticides causing these effects in humans, but they are also killing essential species while mosquitos are growing resistant to their use. This is causing more concern for viruses like West Nile and Zika, which severely impacted over 20 countries around the world in 2019 alone.
Taking the eco-friendlier route is a way to protect more than just you and your loved ones, but others as well.
