Mosquito Magnet® vs. Spraying: Which Works Better in the USVI?
If mosquitoes are taking over your yard on St. Thomas or St. John, you’ve probably weighed two options: having the property sprayed, or putting in a Mosquito Magnet® trap. Both cut down on mosquitoes, but they work in very different ways.
How spraying works
Spraying kills the mosquitoes it touches. That can bring quick relief, but the results wear off as new mosquitoes hatch or fly in, so it has to be repeated regularly. It also puts insecticide around your home, pool and garden, where it can affect bees, butterflies and other insects you’d rather keep.
How a Mosquito Magnet® works
A Mosquito Magnet® trap gives off the carbon dioxide, heat and moisture that mosquitoes use to find people, plus an attractant. Mosquitoes fly in looking for a meal and get caught. The trap runs day and night, and because it catches biting females before they lay eggs, it helps break the breeding cycle around your property over time. It’s completely pesticide-free.
Side by side
- Pesticides: spraying uses them, and a Mosquito Magnet® uses none.
- How long it lasts: spraying needs repeat treatments, while a trap works around the clock.
- Safe around kids, pets and pools: spraying requires care around all three, and a trap is pesticide-free.
- Effort on your part: with spraying, you schedule each treatment. With our Monthly Service, we handle all the maintenance.
Why the islands are different
Our heat, humidity and rain mean mosquitoes breed all year, so one-time fixes don’t last long here. A trap that works every day, maintained by people who know the islands, keeps up with that.
Let us take care of it
Mosquito Help has sold, installed and maintained Mosquito Magnet® traps on St. Thomas and St. John for over 25 years. With our Monthly Service, we do all the maintenance, so your traps keep catching and you don’t have to think about them.
Mosquito Magnet does a great job keeping everything operating at our property. We enjoy not having to spray pesticides around our children when we are down here.
